Overview

What Generate does

Generate belongs to the Krokodove set integrated in DaVinci Resolve/Fusion 21. Blackmagic lists it under Image Create as a tool that adds texture to source input and builds a seemingly randomized grayscale pattern. This is more precise than describing it solely as an abstract UV coordinate map.

Two distinct tasks are involved: Base selects the coordinate basis, while Type, Scale, Iterations and Detail form the output texture. The archived Base dropdown has Position, Pixel Value (RG is UV) and Both.

Position derives the procedural field from pixel locations. Pixel Value treats R/G input values as U/V-like coordinates. Arbitrary video does not become a calibrated UV map automatically; native source-connector behavior must be confirmed.

Type is a numeric setting with 0 visible in the screenshot. The archive does not provide names or a formula for each number, so no unsupported algorithm catalogue is claimed. Compare Type values with all other controls held fixed.

Scale, Iterations and Detail shape the spatial structure; the original capture displays 16.0, 4 and 4.0 respectively. Precise noise statistics or a monotonic cell-size law require native measurement.

The Inspector shows Scale Map, Iterations Map, Detail Map and Speed Map fields. They are observed parameter fields, not evidence of four distinct physical Flow sockets. Binding mechanics and range must be verified on the installed build.

Timing contains Time, Speed, Speed Map and Offset. Because Offset is in this group, do not silently treat it as the same thing as geometric Center. Use frame-controlled tests to separate temporal changes from spatial transforms.

Position contains Center X/Y, Size, Rotation and Aspect. These geometry controls must be distinguished from Scale, which controls the procedural pattern itself. A directional test pattern reveals rotation more clearly than isotropic noise.

Post Multiply Alpha is enabled in the capture. Review alpha and RGB edges on opposing backdrops to spot premultiplication artifacts; this option is not a universal solution for every straight/premultiplied mismatch.

Generate produces an image that can be viewed directly, contrast-shaped, blurred or merged into a composition. To supply a typed mask input, explicitly derive a luminance mask with Bitmap instead of wiring the image into a mask-only port.

For Displace, feed the original picture to the image input and a generated field to its foreground/displacement input; the specific channel-to-motion interpretation belongs to Displace. Grayscale texture alone is not a guaranteed high-quality 2D motion vector map.

Evidence boundary: archived PNGs confirm which Inspector controls were visible; the Blackmagic Krokodove list confirms intent but does not document every physical Flow connector or the exact noise formula. Native testing remains pending.

When to use it

  • Procedural grayscale motion-graphics texture.

  • Soft structural noise shaped by GaussianBlur.

  • A luminance control matte through Bitmap Mask.

  • A separate image field for Displace foreground input.

  • Animated texture overlays behind titles.

  • Position versus RG-as-UV coordinate exploration.

  • Spatial detail comparison via Scale/Iterations/Detail.

  • Localized overlay using Merge and Rectangle Mask.

  • Noise-range adjustment using Brightness/Contrast.

  • RGBA transparency quality control across composites.
