Sharpen

Multi-scale detail enhancement

Enhances edge and texture detail with controls for fine, medium and large detail scales and optional chroma sharpening.

Sharpen
DaVinci Resolve · Fusion

Sharpen increases local contrast around detail and is useful for restrained finishing or restoring perceived crispness after resizing or soft processing.

Overview

What Sharpen does

Sharpen should normally be subtle. It cannot recover detail that was never captured; it only increases the visibility of existing contrast transitions.

Multi-scale detail controls allow different treatment of fine texture, medium structures and larger edges. This is more useful than applying one aggressive global amount.

Chroma sharpening deserves caution because sharpening color noise or compression artifacts can make footage look worse even when luminance detail appears crisper.

Mental model

Think of Sharpen as increasing local contrast around edges, not generating new resolution.

Common uses

Restore crispness after resizing
Add subtle finishing detail
Sharpen only a product or graphic
Increase perceived clarity in a soft shot
Protect skin with a mask while sharpening the environment

Important parameters

Start with these controls before reaching for more complicated workarounds.

Sharpen Amount

Overall strength of sharpening.

Small changes are often enough; excessive values create halos.

Detail Levels

Controls which spatial scales receive sharpening.

Use the scale controls to emphasize useful texture without overprocessing broad edges.

Fine Detail Size

Sets the feature size treated as fine detail by the sharpening pass.

Fine Details

Strengthens fine, high-frequency detail.

Medium Details

Sets the sharpening strength applied to medium-scale detail.

Large Details

Strengthens broader detail and larger edges.

Chroma

Sets how strongly chroma detail participates in sharpening.

Sharpen Chroma

Sets the amount of sharpening or detail enhancement.

Check edges and fine texture at 100% view to avoid halos or an over-processed look.

Practical setup

A reliable workflow

  1. 1

View the shot at 100% zoom.

  2. 2

    Increase Sharpen Amount slowly.

  3. 3

Tune fine/medium/large detail according to the source.

  4. 4

Check faces, high-contrast edges and noise.

  5. 5

Use an Effect Mask when only part of the frame needs sharpening.

Troubleshooting

Common mistakes

Trying to fix out-of-focus footage with extreme sharpening.
Creating bright/dark halos around strong edges.
Sharpening noise and skin texture indiscriminately.

Production notes

Practical tips

Always evaluate at actual pixel scale.
Apply sharpening late enough to reflect the final image size.
If noise becomes more visible, solve noise first rather than reducing image quality with stronger sharpening.
