Sharpens detected edges while providing controls for edge threshold, mask strength, pre-denoise and edge blur so flat areas can remain cleaner.

Overview

What SharpenEdges does

Sharpens detected edges while providing controls for edge threshold, mask strength, pre-denoise and edge blur so flat areas can remain cleaner.

Sharpen Amount and Radius set the strength and width of the edge enhancement. The Edge Detection controls then decide which contours qualify, with Pre Denoise, threshold, mask strength and edge blur helping to keep noise out of the sharpening mask.

Use Display Edges as a diagnostic view before judging the final image. If that view is full of grain and tiny texture, the sharpened result will be too; tune the edge mask first, then check for bright or dark halos at 100%.

Mental model

Instead of sharpening every pixel, first build an edge mask, then apply sharpness mainly where structural transitions exist.

Common uses

Restore edge crispness after resize
Sharpen graphics and titles
Improve detail without amplifying flat-area noise
Recover moderate lens softness
Create controlled post-resize enhancement

Important parameters

Start with these controls before reaching for more complicated workarounds.

Sharpen Amount

Sets edge sharpening strength.

Sharpen Radius

Controls the scale of detail being sharpened.

Edge Detection Controls

Opens the controls that build the edge mask used by Sharpen Edges.

Display Edges

Shows the detected edge mask for setup.

Pre Denoise

Reduces noise before edge detection.

Edge Detect Thr

Sets the threshold for what counts as an edge.

Edge Mask Strength

Controls how strongly the detected edge mask limits sharpening.

Edge Blur

Softens the edge mask to reduce brittle halos.

Practical setup

A reliable workflow

  1. 1

Enable Display Edges and tune the edge threshold.

  2. 2

Use Pre Denoise if noise appears in the edge mask.

  3. 3

Set Sharpen Radius for the detail scale.

  4. 4

    Raise Sharpen Amount carefully.

  5. 5

Blur the edge mask slightly if halos or crunchy edges appear.

Troubleshooting

Common mistakes

Sharpening noise because the edge threshold is too low
Using excessive radius and creating halos
Judging sharpening while zoomed far below 100%
Stacking multiple sharpening nodes without a reason

Production notes

Practical tips

Set the edge mask before the sharpen amount.
Sharpen after denoise and usually after resizing.
