sStar

Parametric star Shape generator

Generates a vector star with controllable point count, inner depth, dimensions, rotation, fill and border styling.

sStar
DaVinci Resolve · Fusion

sStar creates star-shaped vector geometry inside Fusion's Shape system. It works well for flashes, badges, decorative accents, title graphics and procedural motifs that should stay editable before sRender.

Overview

What sStar does

Points determines how many rays the star contains, while Depth controls how far the valleys between rays cut toward the center. Together they define most of the silhouette.

Like other Shape primitives, sStar can be filled, outlined, restyled, transformed and duplicated without becoming a raster image.

The Shape can participate in sBoolean or sMerge constructions, making it useful beyond simple decorative stars.

Mental model

Think of sStar as a parametric burst generator: point count defines the rhythm, depth defines the sharpness, and the Shape pipeline handles the rest.

Common uses

Create starbursts and flash accents
Build rating-star or badge graphics
Generate HUD markers
Create repeated radial patterns
Use star geometry as a matte or boolean cutter

Important parameters

Start with these controls before reaching for more complicated workarounds.

Points

Sets the number of star rays.

Depth

Controls how deeply the inner valleys cut toward the center.

Solid

Enables a filled star.

Border Width

Controls outline thickness.

Border Style

Selects the border style.

Chooses how the border is drawn along the path.

X Offset / Y Offset

Positions the star.

Z Offset [3D]

Offsets the Shape Star along the Z axis.

Width / Height

Controls overall dimensions.

Angle

Rotates the Shape.

Color

Sets Shape color.

Red / Green / Blue / Alpha

Provides separate controls for the red, green, blue and alpha channels.

Opacity

Controls transparency.

Allow Combining

Controls Shape-system combination behavior.

Practical setup

A reliable workflow

  1. 1

    Choose the number of Points.

  2. 2

Set Depth to establish a soft badge or sharp burst.

  3. 3

    Size and rotate the star.

  4. 4

    Apply fill/border styling.

  5. 5

Duplicate, merge or boolean-combine as needed.

  6. 6

    Render through sRender.

Troubleshooting

Common mistakes

Using extreme Depth values that collapse the inner geometry
Rasterizing the star too early when it still needs Shape operations
Using too many points for a tiny final graphic

Production notes

Practical tips

For a clean burst, animate Angle rather than rebuilding points.
Use sDuplicate for repeated star motifs.
Combine a border-only star with Glow for fast neon graphics.
