Kaleidoscope

Radial mirroring and source-pattern placement

Krokodove Kaleidoscope builds a radial pattern from an input image. Controls shapes the pattern, Source selects source content, and Render controls Warp, sampling, filtering and edge behavior.

Overview

What Kaleidoscope does

BMD lists Kaleidoscope under Krokodove Image Warp Tools and describes radial image mirroring. Use a varied source such as lights, a texture, colored graphics or a rendered particle image. A particles stream requires pRender first.

Controls contains Type Classic/Fancy, Radius, Center, Angle and Size. Type changes the pattern variant rather than the input format. The brief manual does not define Fancy geometry or a precise Radius formula; compare at a fixed source and do not call Radius a segment count.

Source has its own Center, Angle and Size controls. They independently select and position source content. Once the pattern center is placed, use Source Center to choose a useful detail instead of moving the entire composition with the main Center.

Render separates Warp, Under-Sample Resolution, Filtering and Edges. The captures confirm None/Pixel/Area and Black/Wrap/Duplicate; they do not establish mathematical filter kernels or a proven speedup factor. Compare sharpness, aliasing and time at delivery size.

Wrap repeats boundary content but does not make every photograph seamless. Duplicate extends edge pixels and may create streaks. Black helps expose out-of-bounds sampling; inspect alpha separately rather than infer it from black RGB.

For a title background, composite the title after Kaleidoscope: text inside the source image is mirrored with it. For local distortion, use two image branches and a separate masked Merge; this guide does not assume an extra Effect Mask socket on the Krokodove node.

Start animation with one Source or Angle parameter. A smooth curve does not guarantee flicker-free fine patterns. Inspect the full range at actual size and after the delivery codec, especially for backgrounds and screen inserts.

When to use it

  • Build a pattern from an image source and composite Text+ after distortion.

  • Animate Source Center independently of Controls geometry and check fine-detail stability.

  • Compare Black/Wrap/Duplicate on one source, then limit the effect through Merge.
